What is the Academy of Information Technology?

The Academy of Information Technology (AOIT) is a small learning environment, introduces students to the broad career opportunities in today’s digital workforce and equips them with the personal, analytical, technical and communication skills needed for these careers. Work-Based Learning Opportunities

Work-based Learning (WBL) is essential in preparing all students for success in college and careers. It is a core component to link academic learning in school to students’ goals. The primary purposes of work-based learning are to expose students to future options and provide opportunities for skill development.

Curriculum

The curriculum engages students through a series of career exploration courses. All courses use project-based learning techniques with an emphasis on strengthening literacy, project management, leadership, and team building skills while fostering creativity and innovation. The curriculum is vetted by industry professionals to ensure that the content is current and relevant. Students who successfully complete four NAF approved coursework are eligible for NAFTrack Certification. AOIT Internship Requirement

As part of NAF requirements, SMHS Academy of Information Technology students must complete an internship as part of a 3-year career and college readiness program.  This internship experience for our AOIT students will ensure that SMHS students are prepared to demonstrate these skills and attributes necessary to be successful in today’s competitive workplace.  As a NAF program, the internships must be compensated.  An internship experience must be at least 120 hours and can happen either over the summer or during the school year working out a schedule that works for both the student and the employer.  AOIT students will complete their internship sometime between Junior and Senior year, students must be at least 16 years of age.

NAFTrack Certification....What's it all about?

NAFTrack Certification is achieved through an online system designed to assess college and career readiness skills. Student performance is measured not only through end-of-course exams, but also through culminating projects and internships.
