SMHS Academy of Health Sciences prepares students for career opportunities in the health care industry by applying science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills to solve real-world problems through project based experiences and collaboration with industry professionals

What is the Academy of Health Sciences?

The Academy of Health Sciences (AOHS) address the critical achievement gap in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields and develops a pipeline of students prepared to pursue health-related degrees and professions in one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy: health sciences specialties such as biotechnology, genetics, nursing, therapeutics, and diagnostics just to name a few. In addition to the required classes, academy students combine specialized, theme-based courses with real-world experience. Students learn skills and self-confidence as they experience the connections between what they learn in school and the larger world as they transition to adult life.

Work-Based Learning Opportunities

Work-based Learning (WBL) is essential in preparing all students for success in college and careers. It is a core component to link academic learning in school to students’ goals. The primary purposes of work-based learning are to expose students to future options and provide opportunities for skill development.

The Academy of Health Sciences (AOHS) is a three year academy that introduces students to a plethora of healthcare related fields through a series of career exploration courses. All courses use project-based learning techniques with an emphasis on strengthening literacy, project management, leadership, and team building skills while fostering creativity and innovation. The curricula is vetted by industry professionals to ensure content is current and relevant. Students who successfully complete four NAF approved coursework are eligible for NAFTrack Certification. Click on the word document to see a snapshot course of study plan. 

AOHS Internship Requirement

As part of NAF requirements, SMHS Academy of Health Sciences students must complete an internship as part of a 3-year career and college readiness program.  This internship experience for our AOHS students will ensure that SMHS students are prepared to demonstrate these skills and attributes necessary to be successful in today’s competitive workplace.  As a NAF program, the internships must be compensated.  An internship experience must be at least 120 hours and can happen either over the summer or during the school year working out a schedule that works for both the student and the employer.  AOHS students will complete their internship sometime between Junior and Senior year, students must be at least 16 years of age.

NAFTrack Certification....What's it all about?

NAFTrack Certification is achieved through an online system designed to assess college and career readiness skills. Student performance is measured not only through end-of-course exams, but also through culminating projects and internships.
