SMHS Academy of Finance seeks to prepare students for college, work, and citizenship through rigorous and engaging projects that connect to real issues in business, finance, and entrepreneurship

What is the Academy of Finance?

The Academy of Finance (AOF) is an interdisciplinary curriculum designed for students in grades 10-12 to explore the world of business. Students receive a theme-based curriculum along with a work-based learning curriculum. The program is designed to connect students with the world of financial services, business related careers, and prepare them for two and four year college degree programs. The program is affiliated with the national program called NAF and upon completion of the program, students graduate from the program with a national certification. Work-Based Learning Opportunities

Work-based Learning (WBL) is essential in preparing all students for success in college and careers. It is a core component to link academic learning in school to students’ goals. The primary purposes of work-based learning are to expose students to future options and provide opportunities for skill development.

Curriculum

The AOF offers a curriculum that covers entrepreneurship, financial planning, global business, insurance, accounting and economics. Additionally, these courses introduce students to a wide array of business and financial careers. AOF graduates benefit from learning the critical concepts of business management, accounting, and ethics along with the essential skill sets needed to be successful in any workplace. Students who successfully complete four NAF approved coursework are eligible for NAFTrack Certification. See AOF Program of Study word document for details. 

AOF Internship Requirement

As part of NAF requirements, SMHS Academy of Finance students must complete an internship as part of a 3-year career and college readiness program.  This internship experience for our AOF students will ensure that SMHS students are prepared to demonstrate these skills and attributes necessary to be successful in today’s competitive workplace.  As a NAF program, the internships must be compensated.  An internship experience must be at least 120 hours and can happen either over the summer or during the school year working out a schedule that works for both the student and the employer.  AOF students will complete their internship sometime between Junior and Senior year, students must be at least 16 years of age.

NAFTrack Certification....What's it all about?

NAFTrack Certification is achieved through an online system designed to assess college and career readiness skills. Student performance is measured not only through end-of-course exams, but also through culminating projects and internships.
